Our Partners

Transportation safety includes a diverse range of stakeholders involved in the 4 E’s: Education, Engineering, Enforcement, and Emergency Response. MARC communicates with various groups about safety issues. These groups represent a wide variety of professional sectors including engineers, planners, nurses, trauma room coordinators, police officers, road safety advocates and scientists. Each individual holds an important role and offers a unique perspective that contributes to transportation safety in the Kansas City region. This list of partners continues to grow.

The Cass/Heartland Mothers Against Drunk Driving works to stop drunken driving, support victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking. MADD connects victims to trained staff and volunteers who provide emotional support and guidance through the criminal justice system through its 1-800-GET-MADD phone line. MADD conducts a number of education campaigns and legislative services.

Children’s Mercy Hospital is a pediatric medical center and health care network in the Kansas City region. Physicians, nurses and technicians are all trained to work with children. CMH nurses have conducted a number of child passenger safety technician training classes and installed numerous child passenger safety seats with partners in the region.

The “Destination: Safe” Coalition is a partnership between local agencies involved in improving transportation system safety. The Coalition provides a means for different community sectors to discuss transportation system safety in the Kansas City region. It is responsible for establishing the region’s transportation safety priorities, coordinating the region’s safety planning and implementing coordinated efforts that improve transportation system safety. 

The local “Destination: Safe” Coalition actively partners with the Kansas Safe Not Sorry campaign and Missouri Arrive Alive and helps implement statewide efforts on a local level.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration was established in 2000 with the primary mission of reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities involving large trucks and buses. The Federal Railroad Administration develops and enforces rail safety regulations and conducts research to improve rail safety and national rail policy. FRA safety inspectors promote highway-rail grade crossing and trespasser prevention programs.

The Federal Transit Administration provides financial assistance to develop new transit systems and improve, maintain and operate existing systems. Public transportation includes buses, light rail, commuter rail, monorail, passenger ferry boats, trolleys, inclined railways and people movers. FTA has worked with metropolitan planning organizations and state departments of transportation to plan and develop transit systems.

Kids And Cars works to maintain a national database of injuries and deaths involving non-traffic and non-crash incidents with vehicles. The organization raises awareness of the dangers of leaving children unattended in and around vehicles and helps educate and provide support for decision makers to reduce injuries. Kids And Cars also promotes safer vehicles and led establishing new safety data collection requirements and safer vehicle technologies in SAFETEA-LU.

The LETSAC organization provides a direct link between local law enforcement agencies, including city, county and state, and the Governor’s Highway Safety Office. Regional law enforcement training is available through the Missouri Safety Center at Central Missouri State University.

Local governments

A number of local governments have assisted or provided input about transportation safety in the Kansas City region. Kaysinger Basin RPC covers seven counties; MARC covers 116 cities and eight counties; and Pioneer Trails RPC covers 44 communities and four counties. Through these organizations and their existing metropolitan and rural transportation planning processes, local governments have input into transportation safety issues during project prioritization and development.

Local public works

Engineering and public works are important keys to improving safety on the local transportation system. Public works departments are responsible for many facets of local streets including maintaining, improving and building streets and roadways. Local public works departments and their professional disciplines are represented through Kansas City chapters of the American Public Works Association (APWA) and Institute for Transportation Engineers (ITE). Additionally, Kaysinger Basin RPC, MARC, and Pioneer Trails RPC partner with local public works when prioritizing and programming local projects. Local public works departments are encouraged to participate in improving transportation system safety in the Kansas City region.

Operation Impact

Operation Impact is a cooperative effort by Kansas and Missouri law enforcement agencies to promote highway safety through education and enforcement. The traffic enforcement division of agencies from both sides of the state line in the Kansas City area meet to discuss local and national enforcement campaigns and to build partnerships and communication in enforcing traffic laws.

Operation Impact typically meets the third Wednesday of each month at an area restaurant, alternating between locations on the Kansas and Missouri sides.

Safety Street is a partnership between the Kansas City, Mo., Health Department and the Kansas City Children's Assistance Network. It is a simulated street scene that uses an interactive approach to teach children basic safety skills needed to operate in today’s city environment. Safety Street is a scale model city street with mock storefronts and vehicles, offering hands-on learning activities about bicycle, automobile, bus and pedestrian safety.

The mission of Stephanie’s Lesson is to promote a community, state and national effort — including passage of legislation and allocation of funding — to ensure that secondary education institutions are able to assist parents in educating and training their children on safe-driving skills.

Stephanie’s Lesson was created in response to the tragic motor vehicle crash that killed young Stephanie Renee Hinton in December 2001.
