  • Request for Bid: Evaluation Services for Healthy Corner Store program
In the spring of 2011, Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) responded to a Funding Opportunity Announcement put out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for a new initiative called the Community Transformation Grant (CTG). The focus of the CTG is to reduce and prevent the prevalence of chronic disease in Jackson County and the health disparities that exist within the population by facilitating policy, environmental and infrastructure changes. MARC is working with the three health departments serving Jackson County and other community partners on a series of initiatives toward the goal of improved health and wellness. MARC is seeking consulting services to assist MARC and its partners with the evaluation of a Healthy Corner Store program. The program will work with small retail establishments in neighborhoods and communities to increase healthy food offerings where residents have limited access to full service grocery stores.

The primary objective is to review and make recommendations to strengthen tools that provide data and measurements of chronic disease reduction and prevention and to assess the community outcomes of its programmed activities in terms of health equity, policy, environmental and infrastructure changes. MARC expects to work with four corner stores by September 30, 2013, and another 6 stores between October 1, 2013, and September 30, 2014. Please contact Marlene Nagel with any questions, mnagel@marc.org, 816-474-4240.

  • Request for Proposals: Air Quality Program Children's Book
The Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) Air Quality Program is the regional public education and outreach program for air quality issues in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The program has worked for more than 20 years to educate and inform residents about air quality issues and actions they can take to reduce individual contributions to poor air quality. Kansas City’s main pollutant of concern is ozone and most messaging centers on actions specific to ozone reduction while also highlighting the economic, social and ancillary environmental benefits of recommended actions. The main purpose of the federal funding for this project is reduction in emissions from the transportation sector through mode-shift, driving habits and reduced idling.

In an effort to further educate residents and share important messages, the MARC Air Quality Program seeks a qualified author to write a children’s book appropriate for the four- to seven-year-old age range on air quality in the Kansas City region. The educational content to be incorporated into the book will be supplied by MARC staff, and staff will work closely with the author to ensure all materials are accurate. Also to be included is an educational section for parents to help explain the messages in the book, which MARC staff will work with the author to develop. Questions should be sent to Amanda Graor at agraor@marc.org.
Deadline: 5 p.m. local time on Wednesday, May 22, 2013
