Recycling and Solid Waste

Overview

The Mid-America Regional Council Solid Waste Management District works to divert waste from landfills in our region, serving as a regional planning agency for governments in Cass, Clay, Jackson, Platte and Ray counties in Missouri — and works cooperatively with Johnson, Leavenworth, Miami and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. It also serves residents, businesses and non-profits throughout the Kansas City region with a grant program, household hazardous waste collection and recycling education.

The district represents the overall interest of its members through a 15-member Executive Board and a Management Council made up of local officials. The Management Council provides overall policy direction to the Executive Board.

MARC program staff provides administrative services and staffing to the district under an annual Memorandum of Understanding.

Initatives

Household Hazardous Waste

Household Hazardous Waste includes products typically used in residences, such as paint, cleaners, lawn and garden products, automotive fluids, bug sprays, fluorescent lights, and other chemical products. The proper disposal of these materials protects our community health and safety.

Grant Program

The MARC Solid Waste Management District's grant program provides financial support for the implementation of waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting projects.

Proposes a new paradigm of resource recovery to increase regional resilience by prioritizing the collection, sorting, and circulation of materials for optimal value.
