This spring, MARC held a call for project applications seeking funds through the Carbon Reduction Program. MARC received a total of 26 projects from 16 local governments and nonprofits. Now MARC is asking for public comments on the submitted applications.

In July, MARC will convene a Carbon Reduction Work Group to discuss the impact of the projects and make recommendations on project funding to the Total Transportation Policy Committee and the MARC Board of Directors. The work group will consider each application along with staff scoring and public comments on each project.

In addition to considering the pollution reduction of each project, applicants were asked to leverage project partnerships to maximize sustainability co-benefits and equity. At least half of the funds will be awarded to bicycle, pedestrian, public transit or green infrastructure projects. The remaining funds can be awarded to any eligible project type.

The Carbon Reduction Program funds projects designed to reduce transportation emissions, defined as carbon dioxide emissions, from on-road transportation sources. This program, established under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, provides $6.4 billion dollars to states and metropolitan planning organizations, like MARC, to then be distributed to eligible applicants. Funds are available for five years — from 2022-2026.
