Where to recycle trees

To find the nearest location, check the list of recycling services on RecycleSpot.org, search RecycleSpot.org or call 816-474-8326. Most services are free.

“Residents in the Kansas City metro area have many options for recycling their natural holiday trees and greenery,” said Matt Riggs, outreach coordinator for the MARC Solid Waste Management District. “We recommend they contact their trash hauler first since curbside collection is the most convenient.”

What can be recycled

Only natural holiday trees and greenery are accepted for recycling. All decorations (lights, ornaments, etc.), stands, frames and plastic bags must be removed.

Artificial trees and greenery that are in good condition can be sold online or given to family, friends, charities or thrift stores. Those in poor condition should be disposed in the trash.

Why recycling trees is important

Like yard waste, natural holiday trees and greenery are banned from landfills in Missouri and are discouraged from being deposited into Kansas landfills. When recycled, they are not only kept out of landfills, but become a useful product that can be used for a variety of purposes, including trail surfaces, erosion control, landscaping and fish habitat in local lakes.
