Local governments and special districts plan career expo

On Nov. 7, 2019, more than 3,500 middle and high school students will attend a public sector career expo at Bartle Hall Convention Center. The expo will introduce students to career paths in local government and public service and connect employers to the future workforce. Students will have the opportunity to engage with representatives working in public safety, emergency management, health, human services, public administration, parks and recreation, public works, community development, law and courts, information technology and water utilities.

“This event is a great opportunity to teach middle and high school students about career opportunities in local government,” said Annette Vaughn, the lead coordinator for the career expo. “Many young people aren’t aware of jobs where they can give back and have a rewarding career.”  

Currently, more than 20 area middle and high school programs are registered to attend. At the Career Expo, students will explore public service careers projected to grow during the next 10 years and learn about job shadowing and internship opportunities.

The Career Expo runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and area schools will attend for two-hour time blocks. Arrival times are staggered due to the volume of students participating.
