$3 million grant to help increase affordable housing across the Kansas City region

New Community Project Funding (CPF) will help increase access to affordable housing options for individuals and families throughout the Kansas City region. 

Recently announced by U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO), the $3 million grant will help:

  • increase affordable housing production.
  • provide resources for homeownership education, down payment assistance and minor home repairs.
  • support creation of the Greater Kansas City Regional Housing Partnership. 

Launched by the Greater Kansas City Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) and area stakeholders, the partnership seeks to foster a thriving housing system that produces and sustains a supply of quality, diverse housing options to area residents, one in which people from all sectors can join together to educate themselves about the issues and to explore, advocate and execute innovative approaches on financing, capacity and policy.

“Everyone in our community deserves safe, quality, affordable housing,” said Geoff Jolley, LISC Greater Kansas City executive director. “If we are to begin to close the racial health, wealth, and opportunity gaps that exist, we must engage the region to work alongside our partners and residents to aggressively address housing needs.”

“The goal of the Regional Housing Partnership is to build the networks, partnerships, tools and policies that will help our region produce more housing options at different price points and in more places across this entire region,” said Harold Johnson Jr., commissioner, Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, and chair of the MARC Board of Directors.

The CPF grant will generally focus on the Historic Northeast area of Kansas City, Missouri, coinciding with the Bi-State Sustainable Reinvestment Corridor area.

Note: Funds for housing production and homeowner support will be awarded through a competitive request for proposal process to community-based organizations and affordable housing developers. While the partnership is anxious to offer the additional housing resources, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development must first issue regulations related to the grant, which could take up to a year.
