The National Weather Service (NWS) Kansas City and emergency management agencies across the region are encouraging individuals, families and businesses to learn about severe weather and how to protect themselves during Severe Weather Preparedness Week March 4-8, 2024.

“Dangerous and sometimes deadly tornadoes, thunderstorms and flooding can happen at any time,” said Andy Bailey, warning coordination meteorologist for NWS Kansas City. “It’s important to prepare now and make sure your family and/or employees know what to do when disaster strikes.”

Each day during Severe Weather Preparedness Week focuses on a different severe weather safety topic, such as:

  • Monday, March 4 – Preparedness
  • Tuesday, March 5 – Lightning safety
  • Wednesday, March 6 – Tornado safety
  • Thursday, March 7 – Hail and wind safety
  • Friday, March 8 – Flood safety

Statewide tornado drills in Kansas and Missouri will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 6. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the drill by practicing seeking secure, safe shelter from a tornado. This test will be broadcast over NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio. Local officials may also sound their warning sirens.
