Summertime in the Kansas City region always brings an increased risk of flooding, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and extreme heat. Planning and preparing for these types of emergencies can be challenging for anyone, but it’s especially important for our most vulnerable populations.

Few jobs are as emotionally taxing and stressful as that of an emergency dispatcher or calltaker. In the Kansas City region, the 911 Peer Support Team stands ready to help emergency dispatchers and calltakers cope with personal and job-related stress through a confidential peer-based assistance program.

In honor of National Public Safety Telecommunicators’ Week, more than 400 emergency dispatchers and 911 calltakers from across the region enjoyed an evening of great food and good company at this year’s Telecommunications Appreciation Celebration and Outstanding Performance Awards. The annual event, which recognizes the critical role telecommunicators play in keeping our communities safe, took place on April 12 at The Gallery in Kansas City’s Power & Light District.
