The Mid-America Regional Council (MARC), in coordination with the Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization (LDCMPO) and Pioneer Trails Regional Planning Commission (PTRPC), is developing a freight plan, Connected Freight KC 2050. The freight plan intends to encompass 14 counties – MARC's nine-county jurisdiction and extending to Douglas County in Kansas and Johnson, Saline, Pettis and Lafayette Counties in Missouri.

The plan intends to proactively position the region to take advantage of changes happening in the freight industry such as technological advancements, sustainability and shifts in consumer behavior. It also acknowledges the growing segment of independent truck drivers.
