About Communities for All Ages

Communities for All Ages is a regional, age-friendly city initiative that provides tools to help cities and other local governments recognize their role in supporting older residents. The program provides technical assistance, recognition and education to local governments in the region that have taken meaningful steps to become more inclusive of residents of all ages and, in the process, more vibrant, healthy and prosperous.

Accessory Dwelling Unit Design Competition

MARC, in partnership with the R.L. Mace Universal Design Institute, announces HOME PLUS ONE, an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) design competition for professionals and students that incorporates principles of universal design. The competition invites architects, builders, and students to submit innovative ADU designs that support accessibility and aging in place.

Digital Toolkit

The Digital Toolkit includes age-friendly ideas, best practices, and resources for local governments structured around five domains of impact:

  • Public Outdoor Spaces and Buildings
  • Housing and Commercial Development
  • Transportation and Mobility
  • Social Engagement, Communication and Contribution
  • Community and Health Services

Recognition Program

The Recognition Program is a structured three-level program that guides cities through their age-friendly work. The framework challenges cities to think through their policies, programs and built environment through the lens of all ages and mobilities. Cities are recognized and awarded for the completion of each level. Participating communities are encouraged to work through all three levels of recognition:

  • Bronze = Awareness
  • Silver = Assessment
  • Gold = Action
