Topics covered
- Reviewing design plans for conformance with the manual’s detailed requirements
- Understanding required documentation, modeling inputs and outputs, and acceptable design approaches
- Evaluating the application of green infrastructure and layered volume management strategies
- Using review checklists and tools to improve consistency across jurisdictions
- Training exercises focused on plan reviews to meet stormwater management requirements, hydrologic calculations, criteria for preservation, retention/detention, collection/conveyance, operations and maintenance and submittal processes applied to different project types and scenarios
- Supporting long‑term, regional adoption of the criteria to reduce flood risk, improve water quality, and enhance natural systems
Background
This session helps local governments apply the manual effectively and uniformly—an essential factor identified to achieving resilient watershed outcomes.
The Kansas City region has completed a comprehensive update to stormwater design and management standards, incorporating modern practices, advanced technology, and the latest data and modeling used by stormwater professionals nationwide. This latest version of the KC Metro Chapter of APWA, Section 5600 includes best management practices for green stormwater infrastructure, addressing both stormwater drainage (quantity) and stormwater quality. These standards were approved by American Public Works Association Kansas City chapter membership in 2025 and now reflect current best practices for resilient and sustainable stormwater management.
